An ordinance to control storage and handling of hazardous
chemicals.
THE CITY OF READING ORDAINS THAT:
102.001 Storage and handling of hazardous chemicals.
Sec. 1. No person shall store chemicals or chemical
compounds which are of a corrosive or poisonous nature, or which
materially increase the fire hazard, except as follows:
(A) Where kept in containers or packages usual to the
retail trade, no general restriction shall apply other
than that shelving shall be substantial and storage
shall be neat and orderly, and that chemicals, which,
when combined, constitute fire, explosion, or health
hazards, shall be kept safely separated.
(B) Hazardous chemicals and materials of an oxidizing
nature, including, but not limited to, nitrates and
chlorates, when kept in warehouses, factories, or
wholesale stores, shall be stored in dry places, and
the chief of the fire department may require a separate
room or building when the quantity stored constitutes a
material hazard.
(C) Bulk storage of two (2) or more carboys of hazardous
acid shall be outside in a yard or an enclosure, or
properly protected in special rooms provided with
suitable containers.
Effective date. This Ordinance to take effect 10 days after adoption by the City Council.
