34.000 SCHOOL BUSES* Ord. No. 72 Adopted: May 9, 1990

An ordinance providing for the stopping for school buses
within the City of Reading and providing penalties for the
violation thereof.
THE CITY OF READING ORDAINS:
34.001 Paint; signs.
Sec. 1. School buses which transport pupils within the City
of Reading shall be painted and shall contain signs on the front
and back of the school bus as approved by the Department of
Transportation and the Superintendent of the Public Instruction.
34.002 Overtaking, meeting or passing.
Sec. 2. The driver of a vehicle that overtakes or meets a
school bus which is stopped and which is displaying two
alternately flashing red lights located at the same level shall
bring the vehicle to a full stop not less than ten (10) feet from
the school bus and shall not proceed until the school bus resumes
motion or the visual signals are no longer activated. The driver
of the school bus, before resuming motion, shall deactivate the
flashing lights, shall permit stopped traffic to proceed, and
shall, resuming motion, proceed in a manner that will allow
congested traffic to disburse by keeping the bus as near to the
right side of the road as can be done with safety.
34.003 Discharge of passengers.
Sec. 3. Passengers who cross the road upon being discharged
from a school bus shall cross in front of the stopped school bus.
34.004 Failure to stop.
Sec. 4. The driver of a vehicle who fails to stop for a
school bus as required by Sections 2 through 4 of this Ordinance
shall be guilty of a misdemeanor.
34.005 Penalty.
Sec. 5. Any person violating any provisions of this
Ordinance upon conviction thereof in any court of competent
jurisdiction shall be subject to a fine of not more than Five
Hundred ($500) Dollars or to imprisonment in the County Jail for
a period of not more than ninety (90) days or to both such fine
and imprisonment in the discretion of the court.
34.006 Effective date.
Sec. 6. This ordinance shall take effect and be in force, 20 days from and after its enactment as provided by the City of Reading. |
